The Municipality of Ioannina is taking a significant step towards sustainable micromobility by introducing 55 electric bicycles to the city. This initiative aligns with the city’s broader commitment to sustainable transport solutions. Notably, this development complements an existing private initiative that has already introduced electric bicycles throughout the city, further enhancing Ioannina’s mobility landscape.

The Municipality of Ioannina is also taking further steps toward sustainable urban mobility through the ELABORATOR project, which adopts a holistic approach to planning, designing, implementing, and deploying innovative interventions. These include smart enforcement tools, space redesign and dynamic allocation, shared services, and the integration of active and green modes of transportation. A key initiative involves the installation of self-charging electric bicycle stations, allowing users to securely lock and charge e-bikes at these locations. Dedicated software will manage the system, enabling automatic bike rental and charging without staff presence. For the first two years, citizens will be able to use the electric bicycles free of charge, with the opportunity to return them to any of the parking points strategically placed throughout the municipality. A mobile application will provide real-time updates on bike availability and station status, ensuring ease of access and convenience for users.

Features of the New System

Among the 55 bicycles, two are specifically designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity in this sustainable mobility initiative. The system will operate across eight strategically placed stations, all equipped with automatic charging capabilities.

Three of the eight stations will feature a bicycle rental terminal with touchscreen functionality and integrated credit and debit card readers. Additionally, users will have the option to access the system via a dedicated mobile application. The remaining five stations will function exclusively through the mobile app, which users can install on their smartphones. These stations will also include an advanced charging system integrated with an industrial computer and 4G router for seamless connectivity.

This project underscores Ioannina’s commitment to fostering a greener urban environment while promoting sustainable and accessible mobility options for all citizens. With a focus on reducing CO₂ emissions by 20% in the short term (2020) and 40% by 2030, the Municipality of Ioannina aims to lead the way in sustainable transport solutions.
