Ioannina’s Living Lab is dedicated to supporting the MOBILITIES for EU project by addressing our city’s key priorities: improving school mobility plans, promoting cycling infrastructure, and accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles. Our approach begins with schools, engaging students and their families to raise awareness and encourage sustainable mobility choices from an early age.

Initially, we will focus on developing safe and accessible cycling routes, installing secure bike parking, and launching pilot initiatives for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. A key part of our vision is to create a pilot neighborhood in the city center with fewer cars, more walking and cycling, and safer roads for everyone. Over time, we aim to expand these efforts based on community feedback and proven success, ensuring long-term impact. Our approach draws inspiration from pilot actions in Madrid and Dresden, adapting best practices to fit Ioannina’s unique mobility needs.

School Mobility Engagement – We will start by working with schools to raise awareness and encourage sustainable travel habits among students and their families. Through workshops, mobility plans, and hands-on activities, we aim to shift daily commutes toward more walking, cycling, and public transport use. Safe Cycling Infrastructure – We plan to develop dedicated and connected cycling paths to make cycling a safe and attractive option. Additionally, we will install secure bike parking facilities to further encourage active mobility. Pilot Neighborhood with Reduced Car Traffic – A key initiative is the creation of a low-car pilot neighborhood in the city center, prioritizing walking, cycling, and safer roads. This area will serve as a model for sustainable urban mobility, offering wider sidewalks, improved pedestrian crossings, and traffic-calming measures. Electric Vehicle (EV) Adoption – To support the transition to cleaner transportation, we will launch pilot projects for EV charging stations in strategic locations, making electric mobility more accessible.

Ioannina’s Living Lab is fully aligned with the aims of the MOBILITIES for EU project, which seeks to develop and test innovative mobility solutions that can be scaled across European cities. Our focus on active mobility, school engagement, and electrification directly supports the project’s goals of reducing emissions, improving urban transport, and enhancing the quality of life in cities.
Our Living Lab serves as a testing ground for sustainable mobility solutions, starting with: Encouraging behavioral change by educating students and families on sustainable mobility choices. Developing infrastructure for cycling and walking, ensuring safety and accessibility. Reducing car dependency through a pilot low-car neighborhood in the city center. Facilitating the transition to electric mobility by introducing EV charging stations. Vision Beyond the Living Lab and the Project Our long-term goal is to scale and institutionalize these initiatives, ensuring that successful pilot actions become permanent policies. Based on feedback and results, we aim to:
✅ Expand safe cycling and pedestrian infrastructure citywide.
✅ Integrate lessons from our pilot neighborhood into urban planning strategies.
✅ Strengthen Ioannina’s role as a model Mission City, inspiring other Greek and European cities to adopt similar sustainable mobility approaches. By leveraging the experience gained through MOBILITIES for EU, Ioannina aspires to pioneer innovative urban mobility solutions that contribute to climate neutrality and smarter, more livable cities beyond the project’s duration.
