In February 2025, the Digital Office of Madrid City Council took the stage at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the world’s leading event for connectivity and digital innovation.
Under the theme “Digital Transformation: From a Smart City to a Human Adaptive One,” the team presented how Madrid is placing citizens at the heart of its digital agenda through the MOBILITIES FOR EU project. As one of our two lead cities, Madrid is piloting ambitious mobility solutions that combine electrification, automation, connectivity, and renewable energy to create more sustainable and inclusive urban spaces.
The presentation highlighted a range of pilot activities underway in the city, including the deployment of connected and autonomous electric vehicles in Mercamadrid – Spain’s largest wholesale market – alongside the implementation of intelligent energy grids and smart charging systems. Further developments include the introduction of green hydrogen-powered buses and shared infrastructure for passenger and freight fleets at EMT Madrid facilities.
These actions are part of Madrid’s broader digital transformation strategy, which focuses on interoperability, data-driven services, and collaborative public-private governance. As a recognised EU Mission City, Madrid is setting the pace for climate-neutral, digitally enabled urban innovation.
By participating in MWC 2025, Madrid reaffirmed its position as a digital capital – demonstrating how local governments can lead Europe’s green and digital transitions through practical, people-first innovation in mobility.
